INMATE LOCATOR INFORMATION
The Freedom of Information Act (5 USC 552) and the Privacy Act of 1974 (5 USC 552a) authorize the release of certain information about Federal inmates to any member of the general public requesting it.
This includes information such as name, age, and register number, as well as sentencing and confinement data (offense, date sentenced, institution of confinement, etc.).
Who is a Federal Inmate?
With a few exceptions, only inmates convicted of violating Federal laws (laws of the United States) are sent to Federal prisons. Individuals awaiting trial for violating Federal laws are also held in Federal prisons. The Federal Bureau of Prisons also houses a few state inmates. However, most inmates convicted of violating state or local laws are sent to state prisons or city or county jails.

How to Get Inmate Information
1. Submit an e-mail (or write by regular mail) to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) office. FOIA requests are processed as quickly as possible! Usually, there is no charge for inmate location requests. However, please be aware that if you request additional information, you may be charged for research time. Read through the FOIA page for a complete discussion of fees (and the mailing address).
2. Call the national Inmate Locator number at 202-307-3126, 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. weekdays, Eastern Time. Due to the large volume of requests, callers may experience delays.
3. For Federal inmates released before 1982, please write to the Office of Communications and Archives, Federal Bureau of Prisons, 320 First St., NW., Washington, DC 20534; Attn: Historic Inmate Locator Request.
Please include as much identifying information as possible - name, including middle name/initial if known, aliases, date of birth, race, crime, approximate dates in prison, name of prison, etc. The more information you provide, the more quickly the request can be processed.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons does not have any information on non-Federal inmates! However, most states have their own locator systems. Contact the department of corrections in your state for further information. For your convenience, the phone numbers are provided here.
