(Albany-AP)

Biological parents can seek to have adoption records unsealed in New York state.

That's the decision today from a state appeals court that overturned a ruling by a Family Court judge in Broome County.

The Binghamton judge ruled that the section of a 1994 state law allowing for the unsealing of adoption records applies only

to children seeking to know more about their biological parents.

But the Appellate Court in Albany says that ruling was in error.

Their reading of the 1994 law indicates that nothing in the statute would preclude the birth parents from seeking information about the children they put up for adoption.

The decision means a Broome County woman identified only as ``Rosemarie T-T'' will most likely be able to contact the son she gave up for adoption in 1978.

The woman says she wants to track down her son so she can tell him about his birth parents' predisposition to several potentially dangerous health conditions.
